Wrightsville Beach NC – Mixed Use Project is Approved

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

The Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman has approved a mixed-use project to be built between Salisbury and Seagull Street, next to Johnny Mercer’s Pier.

As a Wilmington NC resident and avid surfer, finding available parking spots is almost impossible as it is so I’m not looking forward to the increase of construction and crowds.

However, the increase in shops, businesses and hopefully eating spots will make downtown Wrightsville Beach a nice little place to hang out. And hopefully the increased revenue will give the town more money for public amenities such as restrooms and possibly help reduce the cost of parking.

Trouble with Dreamweaver 8 on Mac OS X

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Found out from a friend today that Dreamweaver 8 (Studio 8) is not fully compatible with Mac’s new Intel based computers yet but instead is using an emulation software called Rosetta. Rosetta allows software that is PowerPC compatible to be run on the new Intel based computers. Adobe’s next release of the Studio (and Photoshop3) should all be fully compatible but for now we have to make do until the new releases come out.

Been noticing my Dreamweaver has been kinda slow compared to my previous PC experience so thats why I did some research.

When buying software for Macs, look for the Universal symbol – that lets you know the application is using Apple’s Xcode and means it runs natively on both the new Intel-based Mac computers and on legacy PowerPC-based Mac systems.

This PDF might be helpful – I know it was for me.

Hope this helps some other Mac newbies out there.

How to Print Screen on a Mac

How to take a screen shot on a Mac

Cmd + Shift + 3

Your Mac should make a shutter sound – like a camera taking a picture type sound.

If you switched your Cmd key with your Ctrl key like me, then it would be:

Ctrl + Shift + 3

Hope this helps!

Cool FTP client for a Mac – Transmit

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Finally found a nice FTP client for my new Mac – Transmit.

If you came from a PC like me you are probably familiar with other FTP clients like Filezilla, WSFTP or IPSwitch.

Pros:
These all pretty look the same – your PC is on the left and the server you are connecting to is on the right. I like that, am use to it, and work faster that way. And that’s how Transmit is.

Other FTP clients for Mac like Fetch did not have the 2 panes and it was hard for me to adjust.

Cons:
However, Transmit is $29.95 so it is on the pricey side for an FTP client.

Money and project management software for a Mac – iBank and iBiz

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Been continuing my search on the net for good Mac software ever since I switched to a Mac about 3 weeks ago.

Found 2 new good ones from IGGSoftware – iBiz and iBank

iBiz lets you define clients, define projects for a client, and then specify the work you did for that project and how much each task costs. For example, I set up a service called ‘Flash’. I set up my standard Flash rate, punch in the number of hours I worked, and then it calculates the total and adds it to the project total.

iBank is a nice budget tool that helps you see what you are spending and what you are getting. It has some nice graphs, budget tools and easily lets you categorize your expenses and purchases.

I think they can be linked somehow but have not gotten that far yet. They both seem to have a ton of functions and capabilities that I have not tapped into yet.

iBank is around $40 and iBiz is $50. You can get both for $65 if you buy them together.

Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+X vs. Cmd+C, Cmd+V, Cmd+X

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

I finally got a Mac for work but my work flow was slowing down because I could not use the same shortcuts I used on my PC.

Specifically, the beloved copy, paste and cut shortcuts, Ctrl+c, Ctrl+v and Ctrl+x, respectively. On the Mac, you can still use those shortcuts, but you have to use the Apple/Cmd key instead – its the 2 kesy that have an Apple on it – either side of the space bar.

To fix this problem, click on the Apple in the top left of your screen, > System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Modifier Keys (button on the bottom of the window) and change the Ctrl key to the command key and the Cmd key to the control key. Voila!!! Now you all you old skool PC peeps like me can keep using Ctrl+c,v,x like we use to.Hope this helps. This article helped me a lot.

Password manager for Mac OS – Wallet

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

When I was on a PC I used Any Password. Now that I’m on a Mac Book Pro, I found a nice tool called Wallet.

Wallet was developed by Waterfall Software and they are now on version 2.6.Wallet allows you to create groups/folders, store passwords, account numbers, serial numbers, etc…you know, all that important stuff that you can’t remember.
You can also sync it up with your iPod, it does backups, has a widget, autofill features and has a password generator. It is also extremely flexible where you can even create custom fields. For example, I created a folder that has the ip addresses, usernames, passwords, url links and notes for all the servers I manage. Then I created another folder that contains all the serial numbers for the software that i buy and a url link to that software supplier.
I give the Wallet 10 stars out of 10!

Macbook Pro iSight

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Just got my new Macbook Pro a week or two ago and the wife and I were playing around with Photobooth, a program where you can take pictures of yourself using the built in camera at the top of the laptop. There are some pretty funky settings on there that allow you to alter/distort the camera view – think crazy-mirror-funhouse on steroids. Ever seen those birthday cards with the picture of a cute little kitty with big bulging eyes?

Anyways, I think iSafe is pretty cool. We use it at work for video conferencing – even though we’re like 20ft from each other – it’s just cooler that way. Using iChat, you can invite someone else who has a camera to a video chat. They can see you, you can see them, you can make it full screen, and you can talk back and forth using the built in microphone. Cool huh?

Mac OS Check Off Software

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Since switching to a Mac about 3 weeks ago, I’ve been searching the net for Mac specific software and recording it on this blog.
This week I was looking for a task list manager to help remind me of things I need to do.
Luckily, I found Check Off, a simple Mac designed software app that has the following features:
– Easily accessible from the Mac OS X Menu Bar.
– Allows creation of groups of items and can be sorted by color
– Each item can have its own note for more information.
– Finder-like Labels.
– iPod Synchronization so you can take your tasks on-the-go (iPod must support notes feature).
– Did I mention free? Its free!
I’ve been using it for a week now – so far so good. No crashes or force quits. Only thing is that I have to restart it every time I reboot. Wish it would just stay on. You know it’s on because it puts a little check mark in the top right corner of your Mac.

Taking the plunge (maybe) PC vs Mac

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

My home PC is getting horribly slow whenever I run Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Even my wife is starting to complain when checking her email.

So I might be buying a new computer soon and am thinking about making the ultimate switch from XP to Mac OS X.

But with Vista coming out soon, I’m not sure.

Anyone out there ever switched? What are your thoughts?
